The American Diabetes Association recently released new guidelines for physicians in diagnosing prediabetes. The guidelines lower the acceptable level of blood glucose to 100 mg/dL from 110 mg/dL. Experts agree that the new guidelines are important because, once physicians know that their patients are prediabetic, they can take measures to stop the condition from worsening?usually with diet and exercise. Prediabetes is a serious condition because most people with diabetes develop prediabetes first. Also, recent research has indicated that, before full-scale diabetes happens, prediabetics may be suffering damage to the heart and circulatory system.
