In the past, some investigators hypothesized that statins may reduce levels of reproductive hormones because these hormones are derived from molecules similar to cholesterol. However, researchers reported in the American Journal of Medicine that statins had no effect on hormone levels regardless of menopausal status among 453 women, 144 of whom were premenopausal. All of the women were undergoing angioplasty because of suspected heart disease. As expected, statins lowered cholesterol among both premenopausal and postmenopausal women.
