What Are Some of the Challenges in Starting a New Specialty Pharmacy?

Achilles Alon, PharmD, RPh, Director of Specialty Pharmacy, Co-owner of ACE-Rx Specialty Pharmacy, tackles some of the challenges in starting a new specialty pharmacy.

Alon: Specialty pharmacy is relatively new as a niche in pharmacy. So, there’s a lot to learn in terms of how to set up a pharmacy, what contracts you need to get, and what accreditations are required.

I think navigating that was a little difficult for us. We did have some mentors. So, for anyone who is starting a specialty pharmacy now, I think one of the big pieces of advice I’d give is find a mentor, someone who’s been through this recently that can sort of help you and guide you through the process.
