A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that premature atrial contraction count may improve atrial fibrillation risk model performance. The prospective cohort study examined the effect of premature atrial contraction count on atrial fibrillation risk model performance in patients with prevalent atrial fibrillation enrolled in the Cardiovascular Health Study. The results indicated that doubling the hourly premature atrial contraction count was related to a significant increase in the risk for atrial fibrillation and overall mortality. The researchers conclude that premature atrial contraction count offers greater atrial risk discrimination and improves risk reclassification.
