Abbott has launched Similac 360 Total Care, an infant formula that has a blend of 5 prebiotics. According to a company statement, 70% of the immune system resides in the gut, and the formula is designed to promote digestive health and provide building blocks for babies’ developing brains. Investigators studied human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which are special prebiotics in breast milk. There are more than 150 HMOs found in breast milk, with 5 core HMOs that are the focus of the infant formula, including lacto-N-tetraose, 2’-fucosyllactose, 3’-fucosyllactose, 3’-sialyllactose, and 6’-sialyllactose. The HMOs are found in the acetylated, fucosylated, and sialylated categories. It is the closest prebiotic blend to breast milk to date.
