PRESS RELEASE
MILWAUKEE, WI — February 6, 2015 – The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that from January 1 to January 30, 2015, 102 people from 14 states were reported as having measles. As of February 5, five additional children under the age of one were diagnosed based on clinical symptoms in Palatine, Ill.
Measles can be prevented by the combination MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. Public health experts recommend all children receive two doses of MMR vaccine, with the first dose beginning at 12 months of age and a booster at four to six years of age. Adults born in 1957 or later who have not already been vaccinated should get at least one dose of MMR vaccine.
Mariano’s 26 store pharmacies have the MMR vaccine in stock and Mariano’s pharmacists can administer the MMR to everyone age 14 and up in-store. The MMR vaccine is highly effective and safe. Residents are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves.
“At Mariano’s, we want to help families protect their loved ones against preventable diseases,” said George Kowalski, vice president of pharmacy for Roundy’s. “That’s why we’re offering the MMR vaccine across all Mariano’s store pharmacies, giving the communities we serve a safe and convenient location to receive their vaccination.”
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that causes fever, red and sore eyes, runny nose, cough and a characteristic rash. Measles is spread by contact with an infected person through coughing or sneezing and can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Infected people are contagious from four days before their rash starts through four days afterwards.
The Illinois Department of Public Health states that any person who is unvaccinated and experiences symptoms of a high fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes with or without rash, should call their local health department as well as their healthcare provider. These individuals should notify their doctor before seeking care so staff can take necessary precautions to prevent others from being infected.
