The Importance of Vitamin C: A Review for Pharmacists

Vitamin C is an essential micronutrient that cannot be synthesized by humans. It is required for the biosynthesis of the collagen that is necessary for the formation of connective tissue, and it increases the absorption of iron. It is an antioxidant that is often marketed for the prevention and treatment of the common cold. This educational offering will focus on the metabolic process and pharmacokinectics of vitamin C; the indications, benefits, and adverse effects of vitamin C; and how recommended values are determined. It will also provide counseling points about vitamin C for pharmacists.
