Approximately 4 million people in the United States have hepatitis C. Many do not have any symptoms, so those who have risk factors for the disease should get tested. Symptoms, when they do appear, include itchiness, confusion, swelling of the belly and feet, and jaundice of the eyes and skin. Once these symptoms appear, serious damage may already have been done to the liver. The disease is curable, however, so if a patient tests positive, he or she can work with a doctor to map out a treatment plan.
