Glaucoma Treatments

Guy Eakin, PhD, vice president of scientific affairs at the American Health Assistance Foundation, and Donald Zack, MD, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins Medical Association, discuss common treatments for glaucoma. These treatments include eye drops, which are often the first line of treatment for the disease and are meant to lower eye pressure. They also discuss surgical options, including filtration surgery, which Dr. Zack notes can be very effective at lowering eye pressure. They also explain exceptions to the typical treatment course, such as in the case of congenital glaucoma in infants and acute closed-angle glaucoma.
