OTC/Lifestyle Pearl of the Day: Bismuth Subsalicylate Stomach Relief
Indication: Bismuth subsalicylate is indicated for heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach.
Insight:
- Bismuth subsalicylate upset stomach reliever/antidiarrheal offers relief for 5 symptoms: heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, nausea, and diarrhea.
- Each caplet contains calcium (27 mg); sodium (3 mg); salicylate (99 mg). The product is low sodium and sugar free.
- Active Ingredient: Bismuth subsalicylate (262 mg). Inactive Ingredients: Calcium carbonate, crospovidone, Fd&C Red 27 aluminum lake, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate.
- Swallow with water, do not chew. Adults and children 12 years of age and older take 2 caplets every half-hour to 1 hour as needed.
- Do not exceed 8 doses (16 caplets) in 24 hours. Use until diarrhea stops, but not more than 2 days. Children under 12 years, ask a physician.
- Drink plenty of clear fluid to help prevent diarrhea. Avoid excessive heat over 104 degrees F.
- Allergy Alert: Contains salicylate. Do not take if allergic to salicylates (including aspirin); taking other salicylate products.
