Avella Approved for .Pharmacy Domain Name

Avella Specialty Pharmacy has been approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) to register a .pharmacy domain name for its website. The pharmacy Top-Level Domain (TLD) was created to provide consumers around the world with a means for easily identifying safe and legal online pharmacies and related resources. To be approved, applicants must demonstrate that they adhere to standards and policies that were developed by a global coalition of stakeholders, including the International Pharmaceutical Federation. The new .pharmacy domain name will allow consumers to more easily recognize the Avella website as a trustworthy place to shop for or learn about prescription medications.

“This new program is an important step in our industry’s efforts to help consumers identify reputable pharmacies that maintain the highest standards for patient safety and quality,” said Todd Speranzo, Vice President of Marketing for Avella. “Avella has spent years building a reputation for excellence and we are pleased that NABP has enabled us to showcase this commitment to our new and existing customers in such a simple, direct way.”

In addition, Avella has shown their commitment to safe online pharmacy by becoming an approved e-Advertiser. To earn e-Advertiser approval, websites must undergo a review process and demonstrate compliance with NABP standards for legitimate online practice. Avella has been accredited through the NABP e-Advertiser Approval ProgramCM since 2014.

NABP has reviewed over 10,900 websites selling prescription drugs and found that nearly 97% do not follow pharmacy laws and standards established to protect the public health. Nearly half of these websites offer foreign or non-Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs, many of which may be dangerous counterfeits, to unsuspecting US patients. Further, health and regulatory agencies in the US and abroad have reported cases of patients harmed by counterfeit, substandard, and adulterated medications distributed by rogue online drug sellers. In order to increase awareness of these issues and to provide a means for consumers to more easily identify safe websites, NABP, with the support of a global coalition of stakeholders, submitted a proposal and was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to create the .pharmacy domain name. NABP will grant use of the .pharmacy domain only to legitimate website operators that adhere to pharmacy laws in the jurisdictions in which they are based and in which their patients and customers reside, so that consumers can easily find safe online pharmacies.
