Bee Extremely Amazed has issued a voluntary recall of 14 products marketed for weight loss.
The Ohio-based manufacturing company’s products contained undeclared ingredients, including sibutramine and phenolphthalein.
Sibutramine, which is known to suppress appetite, was removed from the market in October 2010 because of links to increased blood pressure and heart rate.
These adverse effects can pose a threat to patients who have a history of conditions such as coronary artery disease.
Phenolphthalein has been used in OTC laxatives in the past. However, because of carcinogenicity concerns, it is no longer being marketed for consumption in the country.
Health risks associated with phenolphthalein include irregular heart beat and cancer.
Both sibutramine and phenolphthalein can also interact with other medications.
