PRESS RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 16, 2016) Randy McDonough, RPh, co-owner of three independent community pharmacies in Iowa, has been named the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) 2016 Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year. The award is sponsored by Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. McDonough received his award during the First General Session at the NCPA 2016 Annual Convention held October 15-19.
"Randy McDonough is a very deserving recipient of the prestigious Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year award for 2016," said NCPA President Brad Arthur, R.Ph, a pharmacy owner in Buffalo, N.Y. "He is a huge proponent of ensuring that the transformation in the delivery of health care makes room for pharmacies in those efforts to help patients maximize their health outcomes and ultimately reduce costs. He is a visionary who practices what he preaches."
The Independent Pharmacist of the Year award recognizes an independent pharmacist for exemplary leadership and commitment to independent pharmacy and to their community. The award is named in honor of someone who exemplified these qualities: Willard B. Simmons, a former executive secretary of NCPA (which was then known as the National Association of Retail Druggists) and a long-time NCPA Foundation trustee.
McDonough is co-owner of Towncrest Pharmacy and Towncrest Compounding in Iowa City and Solon Towncrest Pharmacy in Solon, Iowa. He is also co-founder/co-owner of Innovative Pharmacy Solutions, which is a cutting-edge consulting and clinical documentation software company that enables independent community pharmacies to be more efficient, while expanding their scope of practice.
In his pharmacies McDonough oversees the development, implementation and quality assurance of clinical services including Medication Therapy Management (MTM), nursing home consultation, wellness screenings, immunizations, and adherence services. He is also board certified in geriatrics and as a pharmacotherapy specialist. McDonough's work in MTM extends to helping implement these services within the Iowa Medicaid Pharmaceutical Case Management Program.
In addition, McDonough has shared his considerable expertise, whether through written work or public presentations, about successfully bringing MTM and pharmaceutical care into pharmacy settings. For example, he co-authored a book on pharmaceutical care and has written chapters for several other texts, and regularly authors a column for the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) publication Pharmacy Today titled "MTM Pearls."
McDonough is a member of the NCPA, APhA, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacists Association. He has served in various roles in these organizations and received numerous awards. McDonough is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, where he is adjunct professor. His commitment to students extends to the Towncrest Pharmacy, which is currently a community pharmacy residency site.
"At Upsher-Smith, we have a great deal of respect for the impact community pharmacists have on their patients," said Rusty Field, president of Upsher-Smith. "We are proud to join NCPA in honoring Randy McDonough, whose outstanding efforts in developing and implementing clinical services in a community pharmacy setting make him a truly deserving recipient of this award."
