Dapagliflozin (Farxiga)

From: AstraZeneca

The FDA has approved dapagliflozin, an oral, once-daily, sodiumglucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, to aid glycemic control in pediatric patients 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes (T2D). The drug was previously approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adult patients with T2D. The new approval is based on positive results from the phase 3 T2NOW (NCT01042977) trial that assessed the efficacy and safety of the drug as an add-on treatment in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years who were previously treated with metformin or insulin alone, or a combination of both. The results showed that dapagliflozin demonstrated significant reductions in hemoglobin A1C compared with placebo. Adverse events occurred in 72.8%, 69.3%, and 71.1% of patients receiving dapagliflozin, saxagliptin (Onglyza; AstraZeneca), and placebo, respectively.
