Yet again, pharmacists have stepped up to help their communities. Of particular concern during wildfires is care for patients with asthma, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to filling medications and offering crucial medical services during crises, pharmacists educate their patients and provide resources on preparedness, such as lists of important documents to take when evacuating. As respected community members, pharmacists can provide vital information that can save patients’ lives during times of crisis.
This issue discusses pharmacists’ roles as counselors and educators. For example, their expertise in pharmacology and medication interactions makes them invaluable resources for navigating the complexities of cannabis therapy. Pharmacists can assess a patient’s medications to identify potential drug interactions with cannabis, which can range from mild adverse effects to serious complications. Read more about counseling points for cannabis in the feature article by Kathleen Kenny, PharmD, RPh.
Author Anjeza Fero, PharmD, RPh, tackles the challenging topic of mental health and suicide awareness. With their close patient relationships, pharmacists are in a key position to identify potential mental health concerns among patients and provide education. Fero reviews warning signs of suicidal behavior and provides screening and assessment tools for pharmacists.
In addition to their medication expertise, pharmacists’ role as community leaders cannot be overstated. In all the topics discussed above, pharmacists are looked to for education, resources, and help. As always, pharmacists are continuing to demonstrate their value.
