Partnership Aims to Address Generic Drug Shortages

Civica has made plans to deliver 14 essential generic medications this year.

Civica Rx is joining Xellia Pharmaceuticals to manufacture generic versions of essential antibiotics for Civica’s health systems, due to shortages in production that are continuing to affect patient care in hospitals, according to a press release from the company.

The announcement of generic antibiotic production, such as vancomycin and daptomycin, marks the company’s first time producing generic drugs after forming to address challenges in drug shortages. In addition, Civica has made plans to deliver 14 essential generic medications this year, according to the press release.

Xellia, a drug manufacturer based in Denmark, is partnering with Civica to expand their products in the US and provide patients with a secure supply of necessary drugs. The company produces active pharmaceutical ingredients and injectable products to treat bacterial and fungal infections, according to the press release.

Xellia officials believe their collaboration will prevent drug shortages and secure drug supply for Civica health systems

“We are honored to work with Civica, an innovator in addressing generic drug shortages,” said Carl-Aake Carlsson, CEO, Xellia Pharmaceuticals. “Our collaboration also supports Xellia’s long-term ambition of mitigating anti-infective drug shortages across the US."

Officials from Civica Rx commended Xellia for their advancements to prevent drug shortages in the US, in a prepared statement.

“We thank Xellia for helping to lead the way in efforts to reduce chronic generic drug shortages in the U.S., including treatments for serious infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics,” said Martin VanTrieste, President and CEO of Civica. “By helping to stabilize the supply of Vancomycin and Daptomycin, we will have a direct impact on patient safety and public health by providing consistent access to antibiotics that are important treatment options in the management of difficult-to-treat and life-threatening infections.”
