Optimizing Outcomes in Osteoporosis Management: How Can the Pharmacist Help?

Jennifer M. Malinowski, PharmD, RPh, Associate Professor, Pharmacy Practice, Wilkes University School of Pharmacy

Approximately 12 million Americans aged 50 and older will develop osteoporosis by 2012, and an additional 34 million Americans with low bone mass are at risk for condition. Osteoporosis is often underdiagnosed and undertreated; pharmacists have a unique opportunity to address these needs by helping to identify patients who are candidates for bone mineral density (BMD) screening; interpreting clinical guidelines and study results to appropriately identify patients who would benefit from prophylactic and active treatment; and offering support and education to patients who are hesitant to take medication for osteoporosis. This activity will review risk factors and secondary causes of osteoporosis, screening methods, identification of candidates for screening and prescription therapy, goals of treatment, the medications approved to treat osteoporosis, and more.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the incidence, prevalence, and burden of postmenopausal osteoporosis and recognize the risk factors for osteoporosis.
  • Explain the pathophysiologic and metabolic basis for low bone density and osteoporosis.
  • Discuss the risk factors, screening methods, and current treatment options for patients at risk for and those diagnosed with postmenopausal osteoporosis and their place in therapy.
  • Counsel patients about interventions for the prevention and management of postmenopausal osteoporosis, focusing on medication compliance.
