Iroko Pharmaceuticals’ meloxicam (Vivlodex) capsules, designed to treat osteoarthritis pain, are now available by prescription at pharmacies across the United States.

In a 12-week study, Vivlodex demonstrated significant efficacy in patients with osteoarthritis pain at dose strengths of 5 mg and 10 mg. These dose strengths are 33% lower than currently available oral meloxicam products, according to Iroko.

"We are pleased to introduce Vivlodex, our third low-dose SoluMatrix NSAID [nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug], and our second product for patients suffering from osteoarthritis pain," said Lou Vollmer, president and chief operating officer of Iroko, in a press release. "Vivlodex now offers patients who are currently taking oral meloxicam an effective low-dose alternative that aligns with FDA prescribing recommendations to use the lowest effective dose of NSAIDs."

Patients should be aware that studies have shown that serious NSAID adverse events are dose-related, therefore NSAIDs should be used at the lowest effective dose.

Vivlodex is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
