The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is launching a program focused on teaching the core values of patient-centered care to pharmacists who are practicing or have trained outside the United States, according to a statement.
The program, Clinical Skills Certificate for International Pharmacy, is an online, self-guided, education certification course made up of 17 modules and designed to highlight the concept of patient care in clinical pharmacy.
Each module offers continuing education credits for pharmacists accredited through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, according to the ASHP.
Using activities guided by pharmacists and based on medical evidence, the program concentrates on decision making, pharmacy leadership, and transitions of car in the clinical setting.
Some topics featured in the curriculum include cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, chemotherapy, diabetes, infectious disease, pulmonary disorders, and special populations, according to the statement.
“As the pioneer in clinical pharmacy practice, ASHP is pleased to take the lead on helping to advance clinical pharmacy around the world,” said ASHP Chief Executive Officer Paul W. Abramowitz, PharmD, ScD, FASHP. “The new ASHP Clinical Skills Certificate for International Pharmacy reflects ASHP’s 75 years of leadership in advancing the roles of pharmacists as direct patient care providers through ASHP-accredited residency training, board certification, educational programming, practice standards, certificate offerings, and many other exceptional member resources.”
Pharmacists who participate in the program can earn up to 22 hours of credit after finishing all the modules and completing the final assessment to validate the skills acquired throughout the course.
