Walmart is opening an online pet pharmacy for prescription medications, as part of an effort to provide convenient pet care at affordable prices.

In an announcement, Walmart said the national retail chain is also providing a more wholesome assortment of pet foods and the company is expanding in-store veterinary clinics.

The online pet pharmacy, WalmartPetRx.com, allows customers to purchase prescription medications for their dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. Online orders can be delivered to homes or other locations. The 2-day delivery service is free on orders costing more than $35.

The website offers low-cost prescriptions from more than 300 brands, according to Walmart. These prescriptions are used to treat a variety of pet conditions, including common ailments, such as flea and tick, heartworm, allergy, and arthritis.

The online pet pharmacy has veterinarians receiving and filling prescription orders. Customers also have the option of utilizing pet prescription services in Walmart stores, which will have the top 30 most requested pet medications stocked later this month in its pharmacies.

According to Walmart, 68% of households in the United States include pet ownership, and 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of at least 1 of the company’s stores. With those statistics in mind, the retail chain is opening 9 new veterinary clinics later this month and in June, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas. Walmart plans to expand veterinary services to more than 100 clinics in the next year, and offer 40-60% savings on vaccines, illness packages, and pet exams.

In addition to prescription and veterinary services, Walmart also is attempting to reach more pet owners by offering more organic and grain-free food options, as well as an expanded assortment of pet vitamins and supplements.
