PRESS RELEASE

NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 17, 2016) The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Foundation announced that James Schiffer, an associate with the law firm Allegaert Berger & Vogel LLP and a former independent pharmacy owner, is the recipient of this year's NARD® Ownership Award. The award was presented at NCPA's 2016 Annual Convention in New Orleans.

Sponsored by the NCPA Foundation, the NARD Ownership Award, now in its fifth year, recognizes an independent pharmacist who embraces the entrepreneurial spirit through promotion and demonstrated excellence in the field of community pharmacy ownership. The award is inspired by the legacy of NARD, which was, for nearly 100 years, the name associated with independent pharmacy. The National Community Pharmacists Association was founded in 1898 as the National Association of Retail Druggists.

"James Schiffer started his pharmacy career at the age of 14 as a delivery boy and now, more than 50 years later, continues to support the industry through his law practice," said Charles West, PD, President of the NCPA Foundation. "Over the course of his career, James owned an independent pharmacy in Brooklyn, N.Y., has served as an adjunct professor at Long Island University's Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences since 1987, and through his law practice focuses on health care issues, predominantly for pharmacists and pharmacies. His distinguished career exemplifies the spirit of this award and we are proud to recognize James as this year's recipient of the NARD Ownership Award."

In addition to his legal work with Allegaert Berger & Vogel LLP, Schiffer is a certified immunizer in both New Jersey and New York. He continues to practice pharmacy on a part-time basis as a fill-in pharmacist at an independent pharmacy in Bayonne, N.J. He also owned Jim & Phil's Family Pharmacy in Brooklyn until 2007, which he opened with his partner Phil Gatti in 1979.

Schiffer is a firm believer in belonging to pharmacy organizations as a means of finding a voice for the profession. He is active in the New York City Pharmacists Society (NYCPS), where he has served as secretary for many years, and as the senior editor of the NYCPS Newsletter for the past two decades. He is also a member of the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York, the New Jersey Pharmacists Association, the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association, the American Pharmacists Association, the American Society for Pharmacy Law, and the American Health Lawyers Association, as well as NCPA.

Schiffer is a 1973 graduate of the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and a 2003 graduate of Brooklyn Law School.
