If you’re like me, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is counseling consumers on ways we can make a positive impact on their health – including taking dietary supplements when appropriate. Today, I find myself fielding lots of questions about brain health supplements and how to select a quality product that supports a brain-healthy routine. With so many options to choose from, it is hard to know which supplement is best and how to guide your patients. Here are my top three tips to consider.
1. Choose a supplement backed by science. Brain health supplements are NOT all equal. Recommend one with science-backed ingredients, like Neuriva, which is comprised of clinically tested Neurofactor, derived from coffee cherry extract, a naturally sourced ingredient that has been shown to stimulate the production of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and phosphatidylserine, which helps support proper functioning of nerve cells and communication between them.*
2. Look at the details. When recommending a supplement, it is critical to look at the “other” ingredients, including sweeteners, allergens, and dietary restricted ingredients (i.e., animal derived ingredients, preservatives or additives). Some additives increase the shelf life of supplements, help bind ingredients together, or improve the texture, color, taste or consistency of the product. Price should also be considered. Neuriva provides excellent value and each purchase includes premium access to the Neuriva Brain Gym app – a non-pharmacological tool that provides support for the brain with various assessments, games and exercises.
3. Evaluate the manufacturer. As a pharmacist, it is important to me to know “who” is behind the supplement. Neuriva is manufactured by Reckitt, a global consumer health, hygiene, and nutrition company that takes the safety of its ingredients and products seriously. The company also consults with various brain health experts, including pharmacists like me, to help advance brain health education and research.
