H-E-B, a supermarket chain based in San Antonio, Texas, received the 2019 Politically Engaged Pharmacy Award—or PEP Award—at a reception Friday evening in Boston, as part of the 2019 NACDS Total Store Expo.1
The award is presented annually to a company or individual who has demonstrated commitment to the advancement of pharmacy through political engagement. It also recognizes leadership and participation in the NACDS Political Action Committee (NACDS-PAC), a bipartisan PAC supporting federal congressional candidates who advance pro-patient and pro-pharmacy policies.1
H-E-B Chief Operating Officer Martin Otto accepted the award. Otto was also a former NACDS Chairman of the board and is a current NACDS Board of Directors member.1
NACDS Vice Chairman Richard Ashworth, president of operations at Walgreens, presented the award in his capacity as chairman of the NACDS-PAC.1
“Under the leadership of Martin Otto and his team, H-E-B helped to advance pro-pharmacy, pro-patient legislative priorities, exemplifying their steadfast commitment to these goals,” Ashworth said, in a prepared statement.1
Several speakers at the NACDS Total Store Expo have focused on political involvement to advance pharmacies’ needs, including former Secretary of State John Kerry, President and CEO of NACDS Steven Anderson, and the current NACDS Chairman of the Board Christopher Lane, all of whom spoke about legislative goals regarding DIR fee reform and opiate misuse.2
