WASHINGTON, DC (February 19, 2016) — The Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) is pleased to recognize February as American Heart Month, and proud to note that generic cardiovascular drugs saved the U.S. health system $63 billion in 2014, according to data from the annual Generic Drug Savings in the U.S. report. This includes generic drugs for treating hypertension, cholesterol and other cardiovascular drugs.
“Safe, effective and more affordable generic drugs keep costs low for patients, enhance access and promote prescription adherence, particularly among the 85 million people living with cardiovascular disease in the United States,” said Chip Davis, President and CEO, GPhA. “Savings from generic drugs today help provide the headroom for spending on research, education and prevention of cardiovascular conditions and other diseases. Choosing generic drugs is a smart health decision patients can make now that could improve the rest of their lives.”
