Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy, the country’s largest independent specialty pharmacy servicing the needs of patients and physicians nationwide,
is pleased to announce the company’s compounding pharmacy has been accredited by t
he Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB). The accreditation is awarded in recognition of Diplomat’s commitment to meeting and/or exceeding national quality standards.
The announcement of PCAB accreditation was made by
Gary Rice RPh, MS, MBA, vice president of clinical services at Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy.
“In keeping with our patient-centered approach, the PCAB accreditation assures Diplomat patients as well as our clinical, retail and benefit partners that we are dedicated to providing safe, specialized medicines through our compounding pharmacy. This acknowledgement from PCAB also affirms Diplomat’s ongoing commitment to leadership in specialty pharmacy,” said Rice.
Compounded medications are prescriptions that are written by physicians, veterinarians and other legally authorized prescribers and prepared for an individual patient by a specially trained pharmacist. Compounding medications are integral to the practice of pharmacy and the demand for such customized medications is increasing. Compounded medicines may be offered, for example, when a child needs a smaller dosage than the manufacturer produces; when a patient cannot tolerate an inactive ingredient in a manufactured medicine; or when a physician prescribes a medication discontinued by the manufacturer for economic reasons.
The PCAB accreditation comes as Diplomat continues to expand its best in class practices in the specialty pharmacy niche. In December 2012, the company received URAC certification in specialty pharmacy and in November was selected by Exelixis to serve as the exclusive specialty pharmacy for the new FDA approved cancer drug COMETRIQ.
