BI-LO Donates $121,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

PRESS RELEASE GREENVILLE, S.C. (Dec. 12, 2012) — BI-LO donated $121,000 for disaster relief efforts to help assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The funds were distributed to the American Red Cross to provide emergency assistance to families in the Northeast. The storm left millions in the mid-Atlantic and New England without power, food and other necessities and may result in $50 billion in economic losses.

“Hurricane Sandy has been a catastrophe that continues to affect so many families, and our hearts go out to each of the victims of this devastating storm,” said Michael Byars, president of BI-LO. “People in our marketplace have such big hearts when disaster strikes and BI-LO wants to make sure we join their generosity with this commitment to help those impacted by the storm.”

To raise the needed funds, BI-LO stores across the Upstate hosted a scan program that began on Nov. 2. Customers were invited to add $1to their grocery bill in support of the hurricane relief efforts. One hundred percent of the money donated has gone directly to the American Red Cross, and customers’ grocery receipts are eligible for tax deduction records.

“The needs are still great along the Eastern seaboard due to Superstorm Sandy. This generous donation will potentially impact the lives of thousands of people as the relief operation transitions to caring for long-term needs. Our area has been able to send over 100 volunteers to help in this response thanks to BI-LO and their customers. We are honored that BI-LO Charities continues to partner with the American Red Cross in times of disaster and in support of our local programs and services," added Ann Wright, regional CEO of the American Red Cross Western Carolinas Region.
