Axium Healthcare Pharmacy Celebrates "Let's Talk About Prescriptions Month" by Raising Awareness about Compounding Pharmacies

Axium Healthcare Pharmacy, one of the nation's largest independent specialty pharmacy providers, kicked off October—national “Let’s Talk About Prescriptions Month”—with an in-depth look at Balanced Solutions Compounding Pharmacy. Since 2005, Balanced Solutions Compounding Pharmacy (BSCP) within Axium Healthcare Pharmacy has helped thousands of patients in Central Florida—and across the nation—safely adhere to their medication regimens by customizing their prescription medications to meet their individual needs. By doing this, BSCP has made it possible for many patients to successfully stay on their therapies, resulting in better treatment outcomes.

When talking about prescriptions, healthcare professionals and patients alike are keenly aware of the growing need for individualized, patient-centric healthcare to increase the likelihood of treatment success. And while compounding medications plays a vitally important role in this formula for success, it remains a treatment option that many patients may not know they have access to. During “Let’s Talk About Prescriptions Month,” BSCP will help to spread awareness about the rich benefits of compounding.

How Compounding Works

The overall explanation of compounding medications is simple. Working with a physician, BSCP prepares a customized medication in a special compounding laboratory, using the latest techniques and devices. BSCP then dispenses the medication in a special dosage form or delivery system suited for the patient.

The Need for Compounding

There are several reasons why BSCP compounds prescription medications; yet, the most important one is patient non-compliance. Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. With a prescriber’s consent, BSCP’s compounding pharmacists can change the strength of a medication, alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, and even add flavor to it to make it more palatable. BSCP also can prepare medication using several unique delivery systems such as capsules, creams, lollipops, sterile injections, transdermal gels, solutions, suppositories and even sublingual troches (lozenges). For patients who have a difficult time swallowing capsules, BSCP can make suspensions instead.

“Roadblocks like allergies to ingredients, and the need for special dosage strengths and forms are a huge culprit in patient non-compliance with treatment. Incompatible and unavailable regimens also drive up medication costs,” explained BSCP’s general manager Kevin Wiltz II, PharmD. “Compounding pharmacies like Balanced Solutions solve these problems by individualizing treatments on a patient-by-patient basis, boosting patient adherence and reducing overall treatment costs.”

A division of Axium Healthcare Pharmacy, BSCP operates from the clinical specialty pharmacy’s state-of-the-art compounding facility located in Central Florida. All products used by BSCP for compounding meet or exceed United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) requirements. All policies and procedures are in compliance with the standards established by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists for sterile compounding. Compounded prescriptions prepared by BSCP for physicians and patients located in Central Florida and nationwide include those for:
