ASHP Reaches New Heights in Residency and Technician Program Accreditation

PRESS RELEASE

July 21, 2014-- ASHP has announced that 2,000 pharmacy residency and technician training programs across the nation are currently undergoing its accreditation process, a new record. Programs in the accreditation process include residency and technician training programs that have formally submitted applications for accreditation as well as programs that have received full accreditation.

The only accreditor of pharmacy residency and technician training programs in the U.S., ASHP is focused on growing the number of programs and successful graduates.

“This is such an exciting milestone in our 51 years of accrediting residency programs, as it shows the breadth and depth of our efforts in this area,” said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, Pharm.D., Sc.D. (Hon.), FASHP. “The continued growth of both residency and technician training programs are critical for the preparation of our future workforce.”

Over the last seven years, the total number of programs in ASHP’s accreditation process has doubled. During that time, residency programs have grown by 77 percent, and pharmacy technician training programs have grown by 131 percent.

“Accredited residency programs ensure that practitioners have the skills, abilities, and knowledge to meet the demands of today’s challenging healthcare environment,” said Janet A. Silvester, R.Ph., MBA, FASHP, vice president of accreditation services, noting that residency standards have evolved over the years to a focus on direct patient care and clinical services.
