PRESS RELEASE
July 30, 2014, Alexandria, Va. — The Board of Directors of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) last evening expressed support for the "Pharmacists' Patient Care Process" recently developed by the Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners (JCPP). As a JCPP member, AMCP worked with other member organizations over a two-year period to develop a scalable, viable and consistent patient care process for pharmacists.
"Pharmacists are fast becoming one of the most essential members of patient-centered health care teams," AMCP CEO Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM, said. "The Joint Commission has made an important contribution to improving health care quality, access and affordability by providing a consistent, comprehensive approach to delivering patient care."
The implementation and promotion of a pharmacists' patient care process is a major strategic priority for JCPP. It also advances AMCP's strategic priority "to empower its members to serve society by using sound medication management principles and strategies to improve health care for all."
The document released on May 29, 2014, is based on JCPP's vision that "Patients will achieve optimal health and medication outcomes when pharmacists are included as essential and accountable members of patient-centered health care teams." The document provides a five-step approach to the delivery of pharmacists' patient care services in any practice setting. Besides collaboration, communication and documentation, another key component includes interoperable information technology systems to facilitate efficient, effective communication among individuals involved in patient care.
