Whether it’s seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, pharmacists can help patients find solutions to symptoms such as itchy eyes or skin, sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, and fatigue.

Pharmacists’ top-recommended oral antihistamine is Claritin, followed by Zyrtec, Allegra Allergy, and Benadryl, according to the 2015 OTC Guide. Pharmacists can also help patients select OTC eye drops, nasal sprays, and decongestants.

In addition, pharmacists can remind patients to wash their hands after petting animals, use special bedding covers and dehumidifiers to control mold and dust mites, wear sunglasses to avoid pollen in their eyes, and use air conditioning during high-pollen seasons instead of opening windows.
