2017 Specialty Pharmacist of the Year Finalists
Jeannie Batson, RPh, BSPharm
Director of Pharmacy
Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital
Maryland Heights, Missouri
GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest accomplishment has been creating and bringing to life the pharmacy department at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital. When I started in 2006, we outsourced our pharmacy services. I built a pharmacy team that seamlessly integrates itself as part of the care team and collaborates with physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, therapists, and dietitians every day to ensure our kids receive the most appropriate medications.
SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
I always knew I wanted to work in a profession that would give me the opportunity to help people. My high school counselor was instrumental in helping me select pharmacy as my chosen career. It’s crazy, but I love the complexity of medicine, how each medication works in the body, and all the different ways our body interacts with those medications.
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
Always be kind. No act of kindness is ever a waste of time. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and compassion.
VISION FOR PHARMACY
My vision is that pharmacists be utilized to their full potential as members of the patient’s care team. We’ve moved beyond being dispensers of pills to an invaluable resource for ensuring patient safety.
William A. Stuart, RPh, BSPharm
President
Hartley Medical Center Pharmacy
Rialto, California
GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
I am very proud of what my team and I have built with Hartley Medical Pharmacy.
SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
My father was a pharmacist and was appreciated by so many in his life. At some point, I knew I wanted to be just like him.
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
Be the best you can be, and especially always be the best in pharmaceutical matters.
VISION FOR PHARMACY
I believe that pharmacists will be held to increasingly high standards as we become an integral part of patients’ safety and treatment.
Mike Swarner, RPh, BSPharm
Store Manager
Walgreens
Hagerstown, Maryland
GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest achievements have been the individual relationships I have built with my patients and sharing their joy when they overcome a health obstacle.
SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
I entered the pharmacy profession to help folks in my community with their health. My first job was in a pharmacy, and I was amazed by the impact a pharmacist could have in his or her community.
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
Look for opportunities to help someone new every day, whether at work or in the community.
VISION FOR PHARMACY
I foresee pharmacists becoming the most accessible member of the health care team, a position that will allow them to optimize medication use and improve patient health outcomes.
