Americans evacuating from the path of a hurricane this summer should be sure to bring a record of their prescription medicines along with them,Walgreens said in a public service announcement at the start of the 2007 hurricane season.
"If you evacuate, get to a safe location first, and refill your medication at a pharmacy there," said the chain. "This allows you to avoid potentially long lines at your local pharmacy, and you won't needlessly delay your evacuation."
Officials at Walgreens also urged evacuees to pack their medications in a waterproof bag - even if the bottle is empty. "The information on the bottle label will help the pharmacist refill your medicine once you arrive at your destination." Noting that extreme weather conditions can degrade the effectiveness of medicines, Walgreens advised patients to protect their medications from heat, humidity, and sunlight during an evacuation.
