Calling it a "major step forward,"the Consumer Healthcare ProductsAssociation (CHPA) commendedthe House of Representatives onpassing HR 5280, the DextromethorphanDistribution Act. RepsFred Upton (R, Mich) and RickLarsen (D, Wash) developed andintroduced the legislation.
The law prohibits the distributionof raw dextromethorphan, an activeingredient commonly found in OTCcough medicines, to any individualsother than the FDA-registered producersof drugs and devices. "Thisbipartisan legislation is vital to protectingAmerica's youth fromunscrupulous on-line pushers whowillingly provide kids with the rawform of dextromethorphan as ameans to get high," said Linda A.Suydam, DPA, president of CHPA.
