Siemens Medical Solutions recently launched "Community Connectivity: Healing Takes Time, Information Shouldn't"?a multicity educational road show. The initiative's purpose is to help deliver on the national vision of a connected and interoperable health care infrastructure. The first city to participate in the initiative was Philadelphia, Pa, and the event highlighted the introduction of Soarian Community Access. The Web-based connectivity solution provides 24-hour secure, anywhere, anytime information access and on-line communication to support cooperation among physicians, patients, and other members of the health care continuum.
Soarian Community Access works by connecting the network of health partners, including hospitals, independent physician practices, payers, laboratories, pharmacists, medical office/billing staff, and patients. The upside for patients is that they can request prescription refills, schedule appointments, seek referrals, communicate directly with their physician, and maintain a personal electronic health record.
The program also provides benefits for physicians. Soarian Community Access gives them the tools to respond to patient needs, ensure privacy, and address liability issues. Furthermore, intuitive reminder functions aid in monitoring patient tests and procedures. Responsibilities can be delegated, with the added benefit of a complete audit trail. Improvements can be seen across the board among physician office staff members. They benefit from an interactive workflow whereby they can send each other secure messages and view patient demographic and clinical information.
