Pharmacy Times and Parata Systems Announce 2019 Next-Generation Pharmacist Winners

Pharmacy Times^® and Parata Systems celebrated the winners of the 2019 Next-Generation Pharmacist^® Awards yesterday at a ceremony held concurrently with the 2019 NCPA Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.

The Next-Generation Pharmacist^® Awards is a national program that salutes pharmacy professionals who are defining the industry’s future. Now in its tenth year, Pharmacy Times^® and Parata Systems, cofounders of this prestigious awards program, recognize pharmacy leaders across a wide range of practice settings who embody the innovation and inspiration in pharmacy and the future vision of the profession.

My father established, owned, and operated Dick’s Pharmacy in Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1975 after practicing pharmacy for 15 years. I was able to witness his positive contribution to health care in our community, and that inspired me to pursue a career in pharmacy.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Along with my brothers, I founded and am the managing partner of K2RED LLC, which owns 9 pharmacies and has 120 employees. My wife (also a pharmacist) and I were corecipients of the 2019 Professional Achievement Award from Idaho State University College of Pharmacy. Our 3 children also chose to become pharmacists.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy is to hire good, trustworthy pharmacists and entrust them with managing our pharmacies as their own.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I would like to see the profession of pharmacy continue to move toward expanded prescriptive authority with a reimbursement system from third party payers for this service. Pharmacists are qualified, in many situations, to independently prescribe and should be able to bill for these valuable services.

I was inspired to enter the pharmacy profession because I wanted to spend my life helping others. Seeing how many patients pharmacists can impact on a daily basis made the choice to pursue pharmacy very easy for me.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT

My greatest achievements in pharmacy have been serving as a legislative intern in the Iowa House of Representatives and working to pass pro-pharmacy legislation, as well as serving as Drake University’s American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter president.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?’” This quote by Martin Luther King Jr exemplifies the mind-set that I have tried to adopt and the life I have tried to live on a daily basis.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

What I envision for the profession of pharmacy is complete collaboration with the medical profession. I see a world where patients visit their physician for a diagnosis, then they see their pharmacist for treatment of their disease or illness.

I sought the field of pharmacy, particularly oncology pharmacy, for the opportunities to have a positive impact on patients. Having once been a patient, I have a strong appreciation for the value pharmacists bring to care teams.

I consider one of my greatest achievements to be the impact I’ve had on my patients. Some of my patients have become lifelong friends. I also consider my contributions to science through academia, publications, education, and mentorship to be part of these achievements.

I was inspired by our neighborhood pharmacist when he came to speak at our high school. He was trusted, compassionate, knowledgeable, and caring. I wanted to be like that!

Both patient care and teaching provided many opportunities to have a positive impact on individuals. Collectively, I guess those would be my greatest achievements. From an organizational perspective, I am honored to have been selected by my peers to serve as president of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Pharmacists Association, and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Do the right thing. Be worthy of others’ trust. Build and nurture personal relationships. Take care of yourself so you will be around to take care of others. Be reflective, not reactive. Lead when you are needed. Failure is an event, not a personal attribute. Learn from it.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Pharmacists will be recognized as the medication expert on the health care team. We will be the provider responsible and accountable for achieving optimal patient outcomes associated with medication use.

Achievements aren’t measured by accolades; they are measured by the impact one makes. As a pharmacist, my greatest achievement has been the opening of an independent pharmacy driven by patient care, not profits.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Before my grandmother passed away, she told me to take care of other people as if I were taking care of her, and in the past year, I’ve been doing just that since opening Skippack Pharmacy.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

My vision for the pharmacy profession is one that puts patients’ health over profits, one that gives patients the option to choose and support local pharmacies, and one in which pharmacists have a larger role in a patient’s health care decisions.

I worked on the retail side of a store for a few years and realized that the pharmacy was where I could provide the highest level of customer care.

I helped to develop a bedside delivery program for new organ transplant recipients, where we handle management of complicated drug regimens and third-party billing in coordination with our hospital affiliate.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Always give when you have the means. A little generosity can go a long way, and even just giving your kindness can have a huge impact.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I hope to see more changes in health care regulation so we can focus solely on patient care and treating conditions without extra concern for cost barriers.

When I was younger, my uncle passed away during the AIDS epidemic. He inspired me to provide compassionate care to those in turmoil through education, innovation, and improved care continuity.

I am blessed with a career that has afforded me opportunities to innovate and advocate for sustainable telehealth pharmacy programs in chronic care management, care transition, and neuropsychiatric telehealth settings.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

The effort is the prize. The true reward is the experience we gain along our professional journey by learning from our volunteers, technicians, students, members, and, most important, our patients.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Our profession will soon embark on its greatest transformation yet, as we strive to implement provider status and expand telehealth pharmacist roles to serve those afflicted by national provider shortages.

My grandfather, who helped raise me, suffered with bouts of cancer for a decade. I wanted to become a pharmacist to help those who were suffering like he did and, hopefully, heal them.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

My proudest moments have been being recognized by my peers as Small Pharmacy Team of the Year and Junior Officer of the Year by the Society of Air Force Pharmacy.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

My grandfather would always tell me, “Don’t sleep the day away,” which motivated me to always try to get the most I could out of each day. Even if it’s just a small achievement, it’s still a win.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I would like to see the role of pharmacists continue to expand. We are gaining the ability to prescribe some common medications, and I think this is a valuable role that should be implemented in every state.
