The FDA has approved sildenafil for oral suspension to treat pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs. Sildenafil for oral suspension relaxes and widens blood vessels to improve lung function and the ability to perform exercise without worsening the condition, and it promotes healthy vessel function. Data from the August 2022 IQVIA Moving Annual Total suggest that annual US sales are expected to reach $65 million. Patients should take sildenafil for oral suspension at 10 mg/ml 3 times per day, with the dosage based on the medical condition. The most common adverse events are dizziness, edema, flushing, headaches, lightheadedness, and upset stomach.

Riociguat Oral Tablet (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 mg)

Riociguat is a new drug indicated to treat chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension for patients who cannot receive surgical treatment or have had surgery but remain symptomatic. It is also indicated to treat patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. In both instances, this vasodilator can improve the ability to exercise without worsening the condition. The initial dose is recommended as 1 mg 3 times daily, but the maximum dosage is 2.5 mg 3 times daily. The tablet can be taken whole or broken into a powder and mixed with soft food that is not chewed or with water.

Nebivolol and Valsartan Oral Tablet (5mg/80 mg)

Nebivolol is a beta blocker that affects arterial blood flow through the heart and veins, and valsartan is an angiotensin 2 receptor antagonist that keeps blood vessels expanded to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. Together, nebivolol and valsartan treat hypertension in adults, which lowers the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Nebivolol and valsartan are indicated to be taken once daily with or without food. However, it may take at least 2 weeks following the start date to feel the effect. The most common adverse event is a slow heartbeat. Others include chest pain, shortness of breath, and a very slow heartbeat.

Cariprazine is an FDA-approved atypical antipsychotic to treat mixed or manic episodes of type 1 bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in adults aged 18 years and older. The initial dose is indicated at 1.5 mg once per day and may be adjusted by a physician due to need and tolerability of the patient. For manic episodes, the maximum dose is 6 mg per day. For depressive episodes, the maximum dose is 3 mg per day. Common adverse events include drowsiness, involuntary muscle movements, restlessness, upset stomach, and vomiting, with more serious symptoms including nervous system reactions, seizures, severe distress, and vision problems.
