"Smartphones" Help with Clinical Trial Information
Transmitting clinical trial data is getting easierwith Palm Inc's Palm Treo 650 "smartphones." PHT Corp, provider of electronic patient-reportedoutcome solutions used in >180 trials, will utilizethe smartphones to collect and wirelessly transmitself-reported information from patients, usingPHT's LogPad application, in clinical trials acrossthe globe.The company plans to roll out the initialset of smartphones over a 6-month period for useduring a series of clinical trials.
PHT will use the Palm Treo 650 smartphoneswith asthma patients in the AIR2 clinical trial.Patients will employ the devices each morningand evening to record their daily asthma symptoms,their medication use, and the impact ofasthma on their daily lives. The stored data willthen be automatically transmitted wirelessly to asecure central server. Researchers will review thepatient data via the Web in real time, using PHT'sStudyWorks Application, to track and managepatient enrollment, diary-completion compliance,and patient-safety information.
