Pharmacogenomics Regulations Haven't Caught Up with the Science

Video

Amina Abubakar, PharmD, AAHIVP, discusses the current regulatory system around pharmacogenomics. This video was filmed at the 2019 NCPA Annual Convention in San Diego.

Amina Abubakar, PharmD, AAHIVP: So, the current regulatory system is that we want this elegant science in the household of every American, because the science is so advanced where we now can find out exactly what medications we can give patients. So, if you think about the science of the right drug to the right patient at the right time, the government is really for it. However, the regulations have not been established, in terms of the labs are not regulated by the FDA. So, they are labs with claims not validated by science. So, while the science is out there and we can rely on it, there is no regulation on how we can believe in the data.
