Tips for Living with Aching Joints

    Occupational therapy is 1 way for individuals with arthritis to regain their mobility and independence. Carole Dodge, an occupational therapist with the University of Michigan Health System, offers the following joint protection suggestions:

  • Use the largest and strongest joint possible to perform a task

  • Avoid beginning an activity that cannot be stopped immediately if it proves to be exhausting or beyond the ability to complete

  • Control weight to reduce stress on the joints Also, Dodge offers advice on how people with arthritis can conserve energy and decrease fatigue:

  • Organize chores so as to eliminate unnecessary tasks such as reaching and carrying

  • Try to sit when doing chores

  • Plan and schedule daily tasks and activities, spreading the heavy and light tasks throughout the day
